There is a lot to consider when you try to tackle a problem such as this. There are still a number of unskilled jobs open, but a lot are being taken by either poor immigrants or, in some cases, machines and computers. Where car factories used to employ hundreds of workers to do everything from fashioning the car parts to fitting the engine, this is all now controlled by computers and the actual labour is performed by machinery. I think the idea that Gen Y is a lazy slacker generation to be, quite frank, wrong. The media focuses on the few slackers out there and inflates it to seem as if it is a serious problem. It isn't that Gen Y are slackers who don't want jobs, it's that Gen y can't get the jobs because there are none. With the continual decline of skilled and unskilled work, and the continued increase in world population, it is simple mathematics that says that one day there will be too many people and not enough jobs, especially if we keep replacing people with machinery. Soon there will only be jobs for people in select roles. Assuming that technology improves (and it will) to the extent that all manual labour is performed by a machine, what does that leave the rest of us? Fast food? Emergency Services? The simple fact is, the entire world, all ages and all demographics, are lazy slackers. People do as little as possible and then blame other people when things inevitably go wrong. Who do people blame? Immigrants and young people. The foundations for what happens now have already been laid years, if not decades beforehand. So even if Gen y are slackers (which I don’t think they are), the reason is because the previous generations involuntarily made it so. As for the decline of America as a world superpower… well as an Australian, and part of the place called the rest of the world (yes, there are countries outside of America), it is probably a good thing if America does decline as a world superpower. In the small window between to decline of the Soviet Union and today, America has been an unchecked monster hurtling through the world taking what it wants.
Sorry to all the Americans but your country scares me.

Ben I whole heartly agree with you. America has become a monster. It rampages around the world and outside it (Mars) to reek destruction.

yes ben as you well know i struggle to find good things about america. But i would like to point out that if america wasn't a superpower than another country that isn't so friendly with australia would be. Alright enough praising the buggers what lets give them some 'constructive critism' first of all they need to clean up their image.Even people in australia who are meant to be their allies question their motivies. If i was american president i would abolish free trade agreements that indirectly kill more people than any thing else. For instance under the doha agreeement poorer countries that have an epidemic of disease can produce generic drugs without paying money to the patence holders. the stipulation of free trade agreements are often that these particular countries have to stop making these drugs so thousands of people will die but hey they might have a mcdonalds store openiing up soon there,s nothing quite like a cheese burger to cure hiv/aids. mitch

People who are negative scare me. But seriously, anyone can point out the problems and criticise. How about coming up with some solutions? You seem to be an intelligent, informed, young man how about some answers to those criticisms?
