Dear Captain Capitalism,
The subject of this blog seems to be your comment on Gen Y, that is, the generation which is currently 16-19. You seem to be saying that the parents are spoiling the children so they won’t work.
You tell us this in two ways. One is through evidence and one is through your opinion. The evidence you give is a graph from BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) which shows that the percentage of American young people now between 16-19 years and not working is lower than the percentage of this group for many other years such as 1979 and 1989. This is useful evidence of their participation/ or lack of it in the work force. However, when you give your opinion you talk about ‘speculating’ (guessing) and this is just what you do. You come up with ideas without any real evidence to back them up. In this way you link the low rate of workforce participation in Gen Y with bad parenting. You then say, the parenting isn’t just bad, its ‘unsalvageable’. This means the parenting won’t get any better and this generation is likely never to work. This is just your opinion and not very logical. There are lots of reasons why this generation might not be working between the ages of 16 and 19. Parents might be rich enough for them not to have to work. These young people might still be studying. If you have nothing better to do than think in this illogical way, why don’t you do some volunteer work.
