Internet Censorship Assessment Task

Internet censorship is a very important issue with in Australian society today.

There are two sides to the arguement. One is about protecting and saving our children from harmful material. The other is about stopping adults from reading and writing what they want or another name for it is I suppose free speech.

It is essential to a point that we protect our children from harmful material or from being harmed. Child pornography, like censorship is a major issue for today's society. Also our children are being exposed at an ever increasing rate to sexually and morally explicited material and some would argue because of this are becoming adults before their time. For more information on how the issue of censorship relating to children see http://www.efa.org.au/Issues/Censor/cens1.html

Society does need to protect children from explicited and morally bankrupt sites that can be harmful and that is why it is good that we have censorship laws.

But has censorship gone too far. For example for example I have a problem accessing my email through Bigpond at TAFE because of so called children accessing their site. How is a child going to access my Bigpond email through the TAFE website. Hah. Please explain? Anolther site where this happened is http://www.libertus.net/censor/netcensor.html

I agree that they should not be able to access sites of children in the nude and there should be a register for paedophilers and sex offenders and those sites should be blocked for those on the register. This could be done by registering all internet service providers with the Australian Government (like what happens for pubs and clubs) so children are protected.

This does not mean to say that adults should be stopped from accessing what they like on the internet. If they choose to look at an adult pornographic site than it should be their choice.

Either way as the debate rages in Australia another good site to look at is http://www.danny.oz.au/freedom about online censorship accessing sites that are not harmful is getting harder. Especially at TAFE
