Whose space is ‘My Space?’

The ever popular and expanding internet social website ‘My Space’ and its competent competitor ‘Face book’ have exploded into cyber-land as an unstoppable global phenomenon in recent years. These two social networking sites offer people around the world an interactive experience that allows social exchanges, profile updates, freedom of opinion and expression, the ability to view others personal profiles, create blogs, post photos, music and videos - and all at the click of a button. We truly are living in the future.

Although, this seemingly cyberspace utopia is not innocent in any regard. The most common threat to ‘My Space’ and ‘Face Book’ consumers is; stalking, bullying, lack of privacy and emotional disillusionment. There have been many cases in which this has occurred and to detail every emotional breakdown caused by such sites would be an extensive and improbable task. The sites have been paradoxically referred to as ‘My Face and Space book’.

I must confess that I am guilty of being a ‘Face book’ consumer, and to tell you the truth I have fun ‘spying’ (or more acceptably considered ‘assessing’) what my friends are doing and who they associate with, but at the back of my mind I can’t help but think that I could be spending my time in a more productive and efficient way.

This type of technology has not ever existed in our previous human history, and the ability to monitor, censor and control our relations with the push of a button is not only scary but ethically questionable.

Is the fact that our personal information and social interactions, being available for a mysterious audience to view, analyze and interpret on ‘My Space or Face book’ necessarily a good thing? or is it just a highly sophisticated 'BigBrother'?

Yes it’s true, that we can now easily connect with our friends and acquaintances on-line, but is living in a computer and having lack of physical and social interaction healthy for our body and mind? I think not.

What the fine print of these two social disturbances dose not exposes; is the social and emotional effects that the sites are having on their users. It’s hard to avoid the inter-net in this common age but should our personal and private relations be transcended and perhaps evaluated in cyber space?

We must ask ourselves, ‘Whose space is ‘My Space?’

What ever happened to the concept of privacy? I remember when people respected social conventions because they knew where the line was and rarely crossed it. People are starting to believe that they have the right to know everything about everyone. This is beginning to scare me. It's beginning to scare me a lot.
