I sincerely think that channel seven didn’t make this decision to silence the matter of free speech within Tibet on its own; no I feel it’s much larger than just that. Think about it, what would channel seven have to lose from screening the ad? Nothing. The government however is another story they have encouraged censorship before…yes I’m referring to wartime censorship and I know that now-a-days its not that extreme but if the government doesn’t want us to know something or to encourage thought on a matter, they have the power to cease things that encourage it.
In the advertisement it is distinctly directed toward mr rudd, the lady in the advertisement SPECIFICALLY speaks to him and him alone when she says “Tibetans have always believed there is a time and place for silence. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is not one of them. Please Mr Rudd, do not leave Beijing without speaking out for Tibet.” The government might think it to be an issue that we shouldn’t shadow the joyous occasion of the Olympics with; or perhaps he feels it is more of a personal plea for help that the public need not hear…whatever the circumstance, if I am correct in saying this is the actions of our government then this is EXTREMELY selfish on our nations leaders behalf - to be frank it's embarassing.
