Generation Y

As the mother of six generation Y children, I can relate to the writer calling them the slacker generation. Gone are the days of part time jobs and saving for special things. Gen Y kids are richer by far than any other generation before them. I don't blame them for the way things are, they are the product of baby boomers. The baby boomers achieved so much, saved so hard, they worked for everything they had. It wasn't easy, but after the wars and the depression they were happy to able to make a living and support their families, they wanted more. Generation Y is the product of our hard work, of IT Technology, and the change in family structure. We have become a society that mollycoddles our young; the media presents a very frightening world.

I don't believe that gen Y knows that everything that they have is the acievement of a lifes hard work. A lot of Gen Y's go to school longer, get tertiary education, options that weren't available to other generations who worked from a young age just to survive. This is what we the boomers have created, a generation of educated and protected young people, is that so wrong?

There's a saying that the more you do the more you can do. Maybe you can keep trying to encourage your children to become independent and try new things and do more. Miracles do happen.
