Children and teenage girls should be taught about positive female role models. If you look at the images and representations girls have to identify with, they are primarily defined through their bodies ie.- being thin, pretty, having fake boobs.
Barbie is just another negative role model for children, not only in regards to body image but in regards to gender equality and sexuality. From the moment a nurse wraps a newborn female baby in a pink blanket and a newborn male baby in a blue blanket, they're treated differently by their family, friends, the education system and society. Different things are expected from them and they get rewards for different types of behaviour. The article states that it wasn't until the 1960's that Mattel was forced to show Barbie in a variety of typical male working roles such doctors and vetinarians, in an attempt to destroy Barbie's "dumb blonde" image. Although the majority of Barbie's are potrayed as mothers, housewives and brides, giving young girls the impression that their expected role in life is to grow up, get married, have kids and be a stay at home mum/housewife. Flicking through a childrens toy catologue - How often do you see a groom doll designed for little boys? Or an image of a little boy nursing a baby doll? Boy's dolls are soldiers with machine guns, explorers and superheros. What kind of message does this send to children?
Growing up with Barbie and Paris Hilton as role-models it's no surprise that girls link their personal worth to their ability to be sexually attractive and grow up with unrealistic views of what women are "supposed" to look like.
