Children accessing controversial information, is a mine field.
Doesn't matter how careful you are or how vigilant, there will still be times when
children will somehow end up in a contoversial site.
Have you ever been researching an assignment, or just surfing the net; and all of a sudden up comes something that isn't entirely what you asked for?
Imagine being a child and you type in Disney, and instead of the characters from your cartoons and movies; you get Mickey or Minney in inappropriate or controversial situations.
What alternatives do we have? Do we censor what they can access, by blocking sites?
There are many online filters available these days, but are we teaching our children anything, or merely controlling them.
Kids' best online protection is their parents. By talking to them about potential online dangers and monitoring their computer use, parents can help them surf the Internet safely.
I believe that vigilance is still the best policy.
Keep your computer in a living area, be interested in what your child is doing, don't leave them alone for long periods of time without supervision. Share an email account with your child so you can monitor messages. Bookmark kids' favorite sites for easy access.
The internet is not a child minding service, and leaving children to their own devices will lead them into controversial sites
