I had a Barbie when I was young, and most of my friends did, but I don’t recall ever wishing I looked like her. It wasn’t until I started seeing what the media and society perceived as the ‘perfect figure’ that I started to want it. It was not the doll that shaped my views, it was the media.
So what would banning Barbie really do? In my opinion, it is not the doll that causes body image problems in young girls, it’s the stick figure super models and movie stars pushed on them by the media. It would make much more sense to ban the anorexic models, and unhealthily thin actresses that children really idolise, than a plastic doll they played with when they were four.
