Australia IS NOT Europe

Australia. For a country with an overall population smaller than most large cities in America we do alright for ourselves.

I find it amusing that Adele Horin, the author of the article finds it hard to accept that we are not in Europe. She expects us to be like the Finns or the Swedes and the "Classy" Danes or even the Swiss. The problem with this is that if it actually happens we will all be driving around in Volvos listening to ABBA and talking on mobile phones that never actually work.
And even if the lefties win and all our money goes into educating people and upgrading our hospitals what then? We will be no good at sport, we won't be able to hold our own in Rugby and gradually the world will forget about us. But at least we will be well educated. And healthy.

But what good is this if we have nobody to tell. If we lose Olympic funding we will be like Saar or Saint Kitts And Nevis or Comoros. Three countries nobody ever heard of, who didn't win anything and who only had ten athletes among them. And as for the idea that we need money to be clever...Need I point out that the Hills Hoist was invented by two men in a backyard, probably over a few beers.

Perhaps skimming a bit of money off of the annual sport funding so we can buy more textbooks and better hospital beds is a good idea. But we must not ever do this. Adele (which is a penguin by the way) insists that Europe is the way to go. Or Canada. With their swanky universities and top notch health systems. But how many times were they mentioned in the news in the past fortnight? Then compare this to Australia which has enjoyed an almost constant spot in the top five countries. Every night, every news reader in the world has mentioned Australia. And that makes me more proud than all the healthy uni students in the world.
