Australia pours too much money into sport…because it is something Australians can be proud of. Sport produces nationalism and encompasses Australian ideals of mateship and sticking together as a team. What’s so wrong with that?
Let’s face it. Australia is never apart of the top 4 in the medal tally, so how good are our athletes really? Should we spend $150 million on a sporting image? Or put it into transport concepts when the fuel runs out (which it will because there isn’t much left and what little there is we can’t afford because the government is too stingy to ease up on fuel taxes)? Our generation has the power to and resources to “make poverty history”. But we don’t. Why would that be?
Truth be told Aussies would “cut sick” if we cut Olympic funding, because our national sporting identity is one that everyone can actually agree upon.
And I mean hey, if Americans can spend money on war, why can’t Aussies spend it on sport? It IS something to be proud of.
