I love the Olympics as much as the next Australian. I enjoy watching the hockey, the soccer, the basketball, and the relay event. I even get enjoyment from watching the shooting. However, it would not hurt Australia to throw some dollars to our unsung heroes the inventors. If you ask the average Australian what Australians have invented you'll get answers like the hills hoist, vegemite and Aeroplane Jelly. Australians have been responsible for many surprising inventions. Did you know we invented anti-counterfeiting technology for banknotes in 1992, wine casks in 1965, the dual-flush toilet in 1982 and staysharp knives in 1970? We also invented the first full-length feature film in 1906. We spend untold amounts on trivial things like sport and do important things on a shoestring. Don't you think that is surprising?
