Australia has its iconic image of the "bronzed aussie", and the world sees us as a nation of surfing larikins. It is with this image that we pump mega bucks into our Olympic hopefuls.
Australia's fasination with sport has gone beyond reason, how or why should we spend our nations budget on the elite few, when our health and education systems are in crisis.
The nation has a major obesity problem, which creates many other health issues. Our educational system is a joke, we cannot compete with other countries on this front.
If we arm chair sports people saw a cut in Olympic funding, there would be public outrage.
"$12 million came out of the public purse for each medal of any colour", wow, how proud we should be to spend $550 million on 46 medals when we are dumb, fat, and we have a drug and homeless problem.
But here we are chanting, "Go Aussie".
There is nothing wrong with being a sports loving nation, as long as we keep it in perspective.

I totally agree with you. The money spent on the Olympics is a ridicules amount. But hey! Aussies love to watch their sport.
