Generation Y
Many Gen Xs complain that Gen Ys are unskilled, unmotivated, demanding, impatient and disloyal. However, these Gen Xs are probably negative and rigid in their beliefs. They were probably brought up to believe that there is only one way of doing things and what is right for them is right for everyone else also. They look at the negatives and overlook the positives. Most Gen Ys embrace change, are non judgemental, and open to new ideas. Gen Ys can also be ambitious, adaptable to change, technically savvy and love a challenge. No one is perfect and everyone has positive aspects to their character. Also, what one person sees as negative can be seen as a positive. Being unskilled can indicate a lack of opportunity to pursue their interests rather than a lack of motivation to try anything that presents itself. Being demanding can reflect a high standard in their expectations and high self regard as opposed to being selfish and spoiled. Impatience can indicate ambition. What is considered disloyalty may be their way of keeping their options open as opposed to staying in a situation that is no longer beneficial. That is not to say that there are no selfish, spoiled, lazy and ignorant Gen Ys. There is a great diversity in any generation. It serves no purpose to make sweeping generalisations. Not all Gen Xs are hardworking and diligent just as not all Gen Ys are lazy and disloyal. As with anything it depends on who you ask as to what answer you get.
