I completely agree with this article. I'm not particularly interested in the Olympics ...Or sport for that matter, so my opinion may be a tad biased. I do consider myself to be patriotic. I can appreciate that sport is something we Australians excel and take pride in, i just believe that Australia could be putting it's money into much more worthwhile causes that benefit Australia's population as a whole, not just the elite few.
There are much more important issues that need to be addressed. Take our major obesity problem for example. Each gold medal won cost Australia at least $50 million, and another $12 million for each medal of any colour. We're pouring our money into funding the already healthy and advantaged portion of our population, while the rest (well atleast, an inreasingly large percentage) of our population are suffering serious health problems due to obesity among other things. It doesn't make much sense.
Australians could be given the chance to excel in areas other than sport if this money was used to fund education or used to help less fortunate people.
Basically, i believe that if Australia put even half of the money used towards the Olympics in to other areas that need attention, we could become a better nation.
Sam.
